The Arizona Cardinals is the oldest NFL team in the United States today. The team was founded in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club and has played continuously since then. The Cardinals were one of the founding members of the NFL in 1920 and currently play in the National Football Conference (NFC) West Division.
The Arizona Cardinals played their first 23 years in Chicago alongside the Chicago Bears. During World War II, the team briefly merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1944 season. Nicknamed, Card-Pitt, the team went 0-10 (zero wins, ten losses) before the teams split again in 1945. In 1960, however, the Chicago Cardinals relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, where they played for 28 years until 1988. In 1989, the Cardinals moved to Phoenix, Arizona and became the Arizona Cardinals. Though the franchise has been named the Cardinals since its inception, it wasn’t until 1960, that the cardinal head logo appeared on the team’s helmets. In 2005, the team changed the cardinal logo to make it look meaner.
Despite the history though, the Arizona Cardinals have had limited success on the field. They have won the NFL Championship twice, in 1925 and 1947, both times before the Super Bowl was introduced. They also won the NFC conference championship in 2008, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII 27-23 (its only Super Bowl appearance in team history). During the game, Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner brought the Cardinals back from a 20-7 second half deficit with a 64-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald with 2:37 left in the game to take a 23-20 lead. The Steelers, however, would score the go-ahead touchdown with 35 seconds left in the game, and won 27-23.
