The breast milk antirachitic activity of mothers supplemented with 400to800IU/ d has been reported as 33 to 68,47 to 50,17 and38+-11IU/L,
insufficient to meet the needs of exclusively breast-fed infants. The antirachitic activity of milk from 9 mothers receiving ergocalciferol (vitaminD2) at 4000IU/d for 3 months increased to135IU/L, which is less than half of the value that we observed with 5000IU/d, possibly related to our use of cholecalciferol (not ergocalciferol).Nine lactating mothers supplemented with cholecalciferol at 6400IU/d for6 months had mean antirachitic activity of 873 IU/L in breast milk. Regulated conversion of cholecalciferol to 25(OH)D likely provides a built-in safety measure. This is consistent with our observation of aninverse relationship between the increase in 25(OH)D concentration and the initial 25(OH)D concentration in infants.
