The unemployment rate can tell you more than a percentage. The unemployment rate is a good measuring stick for the state of the economy. A rising rate in unemployment suggests the economy is weakening and may call for a cut in interest rate. On the other hand, a falling rate indicates a growing economy. The unemployment rate is a lagging indicator of economic growth since employers are reluctant to lay people off when the economy is bad.
