The derivation of the word adhocracy is based on word ad hoc – meaning a temporary, specialized and dynamic unit. Adhocracy culture is an entrepreneurial, future-oriented, and innovative workplace which encourages individual initiative and adaptability (Figure 3). As adhocracy culture has less centralization and formalization, it represents a relatively low level of formal controls to achieve its objectives (Figure 4). As such employees in this culture are more likely to be customer-oriented. The adhocracy culture is flexible in its approach but with an external focus and hence reacts quickly to changes and reconfigure themselves rapidly to new circumstances.
