DISCUSSIONForeign language anxiety inhibits students’ efforts,reduces motivation, and slows acquisition progress.Baseline levels of foreign language classroom anxietyamong the 38 EAP students surveyed in this studywere relatively high and primarily associated withcommunication apprehension. The purpose of thisshort-term, intervention study was to help alleviatecommunication apprehension by creating opportunitiesfor students to produce the target language in a morerelaxed, supportive environment. Cooperative learningactivities were selected because they were culturallyappropriate and easily integrated into the establishedEAP course.
