After 6 weeks of training, the exercise durationand estimated work performed during the trainingsessions increased. Treadmill testing at this point intime revealed that treated subjects were able to walklonger and to a higher grade but without an increasein peak Vo2. At a submaximal treadmill work load,fewer patients had claudication pain, and Vo2, ventilation,and heart rate were reduced. These findingssuggest that the initial improvement in exercise performancewas related to a change in walking efficiencyor improvement in the tolerance of claudicationpain, leading to an ability to walk to a higherwork load without increasing peak Vo2. The abovefindings were not observed in the control group andmay represent a learning effect from repeated treadmillwalking during the training sessions
