For the speakers in this study, the degree of attachment to life outside the county,
along with educational and career aspirations, constitute cultural identity. Over the last
twenty years, Warren County residents have had increasing contact with cities in other
counties (e.g. Henderson in adjacent Vance County, and especially the Raleigh-Durham
area approximately sixty miles to the south). Increased contact and awareness of cultures
outside the county affected the cultural identity of some speakers, providing them with
an opportunity for different sociolinguistic patterns. The clear marker of the new cultural
identity is how they positively associate with nonlocal ways.

Untuk speaker dalam penelitian ini, tingkat keterikatan dengan kehidupan di luar daerah,
bersama dengan pendidikan dan karir aspirasi, merupakan identitas budaya. Selama terakhir
dua puluh tahun, warga Warren telah telah meningkatkan kontak dengan kota-kota di lain
kabupaten (misalnya Henderson di dekat Vance County, dan terutama Raleigh-Durham
daerah sekitar enam puluh mil ke selatan). Peningkatan kontak dan kesadaran budaya
luar daerah yang terkena identitas budaya beberapa pembicara, memberikan mereka
kesempatan untuk pola sosiolinguistik yang berbeda. Penanda yang jelas dari budaya baru
identitas adalah bagaimana mereka positif mengasosiasikan dengan cara nonlokal.
