5. Mechanistic approach to pain treatment
The different types of pain may be divided into two categories: nociceptive and neurogenic.
Acute postoperative pain relies in the nociceptive category where there is a transitory
response to nociceptive stimuli that could be mechanical, thermal or chemical. Nociceptive
pain plays an important protective role and is normally present for as long as the protection
of the organism in necessary; however if not treated well it will persist even after healing of
the initial injury.
