The descending thoracic aorta gives

The descending thoracic aorta gives branches to
the pericardium, bronchi, chest wall, and esophagus.
Of the 11 posterior intercostal arteries, 9 originate
from the descending aorta, whereas the first
and second arteries arise from the superior intercostal
artery, which is a branch of the costocervical
trunk of the subclavian artery. The right posterior
intercostal arteries course directly over the vertebral
bodies and are covered by the right pleura.
The left posterior intercostal arteries course posterior
to the hemiazygos and splanchnic nerves and
then divide into the anterior and posterior rami.
