24 June 1939 – the name of Siam was changed to Thailand, justifying that “Thailand” would signify that the country belonged to the Thai as opposed to the economically dominant Chinese.
•The change was also explained that “We are of the Thai race, but the name ‘Siam’ does not correspond to our race.”
Under the premiership of Tawee Boonyaket, the name “Thailand” was announced (7/9/1945) to reverse back to Siam.
After the 1947 coup d'état , Phiboon, upon his return to the 2nd premiership , made an announcement to change “Siam” back to Thailand, the name used for the nation ever since.
