The lack of liberty was not the only issue, however. The Russians also lived underdespotism but were by the eighteenth century making more persuasive claims to beconsidered Europeans than the Turks could make. A more crucial issue was that theTurks were Muslim, and for much of the early modern period of Christendom they hadbeen the Enemy. Fighting off the Turkish–Muslim military threat in early modern timeshad contributed significantly to Europe’s sense of itself as a whole with common intereststo defend, just as, in the nineteenth century, the steady weakening of the TurkishEmpire was a key element in the Europeans’ growing sense of superiority, as theHabsburg and Russian empires nibbled away at Turkish holdings in the Balkans.
