The results of the trials included in this review are, however, remarkablyconsistent, both in direction of effect and in effect size.Overall, the use of prophylactic antibiotics with cesarean sectionresults in a major, clinically important, and statistically significantreduction in the incidence of episodes of fever, endometritis,wound infection, urinary tract infection and serious infection aftercesarean section. Only in nine studies that reported the incidenceof urinary tract infection in women undergoing an electivecesarean section were the differences in the rate of urinary tract infectionsnot statistically significant and there were too few seriousinfectious outcomes in women undergoing an elective cesareansection to analyse.
