The results of the trials included in this review are, however, remarkably
consistent, both in direction of effect and in effect size.
Overall, the use of prophylactic antibiotics with cesarean section
results in a major, clinically important, and statistically significant
reduction in the incidence of episodes of fever, endometritis,
wound infection, urinary tract infection and serious infection after
cesarean section. Only in nine studies that reported the incidence
of urinary tract infection in women undergoing an elective
cesarean section were the differences in the rate of urinary tract infections
not statistically significant and there were too few serious
infectious outcomes in women undergoing an elective cesarean
section to analyse.
