Auditors of two different ranks, manager and senior, were
enlisted in the study to evaluate the possible effects of audit
experience. Based on Abdolmohammadi and Wright[5]
audit experience differences might be expected because
auditing accounting estimates is an ill structured task (see
also [8,18]). The two groups were selected because their
responsibilities related to auditing accounting estimates
differ. Discussions with the participating firm indicate that
accounting estimates are initially reviewed by the audit
senior in charge of field work. The audit senior may also
propose audit adjustments, if needed. Audit managers,
however, have primary responsibility for evaluating
questionable accounting estimates and determining
whether a proposed audit adjustment needs to be booked.
Of the participants, 61 were audit managers and 84 were
audit seniors.
