Limitations of peripheral nutrition is that only lower osmolarity solutions can be given to avoidthrombophlibitis and fluid overload. Thus Peripheral parenteral nutrition is not the optimalaccess route in situations of severe metabolic stress, where there are large nutrient orelectrolyte needs (especially potassium which is a strong vascular irritant), with fluidrestrictions or if prolonged intravenous nutrition is required. It is appropriate to use peripheralnutrition as a supplement to enteral intake to ensure adequate nutrition support
