It is essential for nurses to have knowledge about children's experiences of hospital-related fears (Salmela, Salanterä, & Aronen, 2009). In order to be able to support children, it is important that nurses have an understanding of what fear stands for, and how children communicate their fears (McGrath & Huff, 2001; Rennick, Johnston, Dougherty, Platt, & Ritchie, 2002).
