3.5.1 Fermentation of carbohydrateThe universal end-products of fermentation of all diets in the rumen are the VFAs (acetate, propionate, butyrate), carbon dioxide and methane. Energy is lost as both heat and methane. The ATP produced by conversion of feed to VFAs and intermediary compounds used in cell growth is the main source of energy for the growth of micro-organisms. A simple scheme for rumen fermentation is shown in Figure 3.4.
