As evidenced in the measured behavior of the coupled wallstructure described in Weldon and Kurama,30 the strainlimit of 0.01 represents a real and practical limit for thedesign of unbonded posttensioned structures in seismicregions. Premature posttensioning anchorage failure, evenin the form of single wire fractures, can result in significantreductions in the self-centering capability as well as in thelateral stiffness and resistance of these structures underseismic loading.30 The residual behavior (that is, stressreduction through successive wire fractures) of monostrandanchorage systems beyond first wire fracture was recentlyinvestigated by Sideris et al.
