LETTERS FROM THE SIDE OF A SLEEPING VOLCANOMenuSkip to contentHomeLettersChinese Vegetable Gardens ~ History ~ Sacred TimeDec. 15, 2014 (in about 8 days the Sun will die quicker in the north and live longer in the south than any other day of the year)Hi,Now the parenthesis in the title may not sound like much to a 21st century person but in times past it was a scary time indeed. Think about it for just a minute? This time of the year is a crap shoot. If things don’t change and change right soon, depending upon where you live, you and yours are either going to freeze to death or die of heat. Then on what the west calls December 22 the sun stops dying in the north and growing in the south. For three days it apparently stays the same! Then miracle of miracles it starts to get stronger in the north and weaker in the south. You and yours are saved from death by freezing or heat. And that my friends is why darn near every religion on our little blue ball holds this time to be sacred. The God(s) have decreed our world will live on!Our Herb Garden. This shot is about two months old. Now there are ginger, Bell peppers, Lemon grass, Oregano, Basil and even a struggling Squash plant. Weeding this garden is a pleasure and our food tastes better!Another little known historical fact is that in the middle of the 20th century I was born in Vancouver Canada, in St. Paul Hospital, at about four o’clock in the afternoon. That bit of information and a couple of dollars will get you a coffee and do-nut in most coffee shops. But more importantly for this little letter it means I was able to see the Chinese Gardens that were cultivated below Marine Drive before they were all lost to the needs of an increasing population for housing. I can still see the endless rows of vegetables being worked by Chinese workers in their Coolie hats.I don’t have a Coolie hat nor am I Chinese but I am out in my garden most days weeding and cultivating. And as much as I can now appreciate how hard the people in those gardens worked (simple extrapolation) I can now also understand some of the pleasures they felt.To feel the earth, smell the scents, be a part of the life of the garden. These are pleasures not only of the five senses but of the soul as well. May I suggest my old friend that you try planting and cultivating an Herb Garden? Not only will your food taste better but your senses will become livelier and soul will grow in unexpected ways.Okay it is about time for SWMBO to head down to work and for me to do some weeding.Take care my friend, stay in touch as you can,Brian
