Due to recent food scares, much attention has been given to foodsafety issues (e.g. Trautman, Goddard, & Nilsson, 2008). Food safetycrises like the bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) in the 1990sglobally caused economical losses for US$5.6 billion, and approximatelyseven million people are affected by food borne illness eachyear in Europe (Kimball & Taneda, 2004; Sarig, 2003;World HealthOrganization, 2002, p. 1). The consequences of food safety crisescould be reduced with appropriate traceability systems that keeptrack of food trades and processing information along the foodsupply chain. With such traceability systems, the identification ofcauses could be faster, market withdrawals and/or recalls of theinvolved products could be reduced in size, and total costs of thecrises could be decreased.
