Having fended off these two great rivals, Prussia finally united the Confederation (minus Austria) into the German Empire, which became the foremost power of the European continent. While Hungary did not achieve independence, it did obtain significant control over its domestic affairs. From this point forward, the Austrian Empire is often referred to as "Austria-Hungary".
