The definition of “elderly” or “old age” varies between countries, depending on the current social, political, and economic situation (22). Most developed countries define “elderly” using a chronological age of 65 years and older (23). The cutoff age is somewhat lower in the developing countries than that in the developed countries. In many countries including Thailand, the definition of elderly is linked to the
retirement age. At the moment, the United Nations (UN) accepts the cutoff at 60+ years to refer to elderly” (22). In Thailand, a chronological age of 60 years and older is officially used to define “elderly” (24). Thus, in the present study, the operational definition of elderly will be those who are 60 years and older.
