Intervention Project (CSI), an ongoing randomized controlled trial of the SCERTS Model for
students with ASD. Students who participated in the CSI Project met the following criteria: 1)
enrolled in kindergarten, first, or second grade at the beginning of the school year in either
general or special education classrooms in the public schools; and 2) had a clinical or educational
diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, PDD-NOS, or Asperger Syndrome as defined by the DSM-IV
(APA, 2000) without the presence of severe motor delay/impairment, dual sensory impairment,
or history of traumatic brain injury. In addition to the above criteria, a research trained
educational psychologist confirmed each ASD diagnosis using the Autism Diagnostic
Observation Schedule (ADOS; Lord, Rutter, DiLavore, & Risi, 2002). Instructors who
