The legacy of colonialism
• It occurs when a foreign power maintains political, social, economic, and cultural

domination over a people.
• For example, the British Empire used to colonize North America, parts of Africa, and India.
• By the 1980s, it had largely disappeared.
• Most of the nations colonized had achieved political independence and set up their own
governments.
• However, economic exploitation by former colonial state often continued partly because
former colonies found difficulty to develop their own industry and technology.
