Currently there are three prescription methods ofcontraception commonly used by teens: oral contraceptivepills (OCP), injectable long-acting medroxyprogesteron(Depo-Provera), and implantable levonorgesterol(Norplant).3–5While each method when appropriatelyused is efficacious, poor compliance undermines effectivecontraception. Each method has a unique set ofcompliance challenges.3,4,6–9Theoral contraceptive pill(OCP) is the most popular and effective contraceptivemethod used by teens.10However, pregnancy ratesamong adolescents who use OCPs range from 8%–18%, as compared to 2% in adults.11The poorer effectivenessmay stem from noncompliance, as 45%–66%of adolescents discontinue the use of oral contraceptiveswithin 12 months.6,12There are four major reasonsfor noncompliance in teens:
