Road Safety
Traffic accidents are costly byproducts of
the need to move around urban (and rural)
communities. In addition to well established
traffic engineering measures to
improve system safety—better lane delineation,
skid resistant pavements, positive
control at intersections, and so
on—there is an increasing interest in the
opportunity to use in-vehicle technology
to help drivers avoid—or successfully
deal with—hazardous situations.
Road user charging systems offer an
opportunity to incorporate safety features
not currently available. For example,
a system could record vehicle and
driver performance and provide feedback
to the driver when performance is
unsafe. There is also an opportunity to
develop new approaches to the funding
of crash countermeasures.
