The results indicate that it is possible to estimate fishing effort for these three species from
VIIRS/DNB image data. All the DNB images were validated by the location of existing fishing
operation. Combining the VIIRS data with boat locations from Vessel Monitoring Systems
(VMS), sea surface temperature and ocean chlorophyll data could form the basis for future
fisheries management and information system. DNB data show high potential for improving the
management and sustainable use of fisheries where lighting is used to attract catch. This includes
many fishing grounds in East and Southeast Asia.
