A proven technique for thought stopping is visualisation, which involves picturing a switch, or lever in your mind and then imagining yourself actually turning it of. Some people wear a loose-fiting rubber or elastic band on their wrist and snap the band and say “no”. Other people have been able to exercise thought stopping with relaxation techniques and still others find it helpful to phone a friend, or to talk to someone with a similar life experience.
