Mumps is an acute viral illness transmitted
rapidly by respiratory droplets and
saliva and has an incubation period of 16-
18 days. The disease is highly infectious
and it is estimated that one case of mumps
can cause 10-12 other cases in a susceptible
population. The classical clinical
presentation is a painful bilateral swelling
of the salivary glands and particularly the
parotid glands which lie on the face below
the ear canals and both project on to the
masseter muscles and lie below the
mandibles extending to the sterno-cleiod
muscles.
