End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the last stage (stage five) of chronic kidney disease. This means kidneys are only functioning at 10 to 15 percent of their normal capacity. (ESRD) is defined as an irreversible decline in a person's own kidney function, which is severe enough to be fatal in the absence of dialysis or transplantation. Chronic kidney disease refers to individuals with an estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 15 mL per minute per 1.73 m2 body surface area, or those requiring dialysis irrespective of glomerular filtration rate. When chronic kidney disease develops into ESRD, dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary to stay alive (Jerry and Greogory, 2015).
