Simulations of capacitor currents of figure 5 show that rippleof capacitor currents is reduced significantly in five-phasesystems. Simulations show that the peak-to-peak capacitorcurrent in the three-phase system is 3.39 amps compared toonly 0.29 amps for the five-phase system. Therefore, it wouldbe possible to reduce the size of capacitors in five-phasesystems by a ratio of 9. Reduced electrical capacitance meanssmall, lighter, and cheaper systems where capacitor currenthas direct relationship with the capacitor size and cost. However, using a 5-phase machine will not reduce the energystorage requirements to enable continuous operation if thegenerator power reduces momentarily. It only will help inreducing ripples.
