Program description

Medical education at the University of Manitoba is founded on the CanMeds - Family Medicine competency framework, and the three pillars of Discovery, Scholarship, and Community. Two years of foundational science, population and public health principles and clinical sciences are followed by two years of progressive responsibility for patient care and management in core rotations and elective opportunities. Diverse research institutes and the affiliated teaching hospitals afford excellent environments to meet the interests and needs of all learners. Additionally the College is actively involved with the urban community and its diverse demography as well as the rural and remote cross-cultural environments in Manitoba and beyond.

There are great opportunities for all medical learners to achieve their learning objectives in diverse environments, to explore opportunities in research, and to attain the skills and professional attributes for future practice and lifelong learning. The College of Medicine encourages all learners to engage with communities in service learning programs, to participate with clinicians in co-curricular clinical activities, and to participate in national and international exchange programs.

Professional opportunities

The four year MD Program serves as a foundation for formal postgraduate education that varies in duration from two to six years. Career opportunities upon completion of undergraduate and postgraduate education include clinical practice as a Family Physician with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, or one of the many areas of medical specialist practice with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

What is unique about this program at the U of M?

The University of Manitoba’s College of Medicine has recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, and in so doing marked many generations of contribution to education, research and clinical service as Western Canada’s first medical school. The College is now an integral part of an academic health sciences network associated with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and the research enterprise not only within the province, but with established national and international initiatives. Students distinguish themselves in their commitments to academic excellence, leadership, volunteerism and community engagement. Graduates of the MD program have manifested excellence in clinical care, health system innovation and leadership, and internationally recognized research.
There is a concurrent BSc (Med) Program that allows students an opportunity to engage in original research, either in basic medical sciences or clinical or community health, under the supervision of a member of the Medical College. The aim of the program is to provide medical students with the opportunity to develop skills at research design, hypothesis testing, critical evaluation of data and effective communication of results.
The combined-degree MD/PhD Option is designed to produce academic clinician scientists who are interested in a career that combines both research and clinical medicine.
