Given the diversity in the clinical presentation, healthcareneeds, and affected populations, no single surveillanceapproach can effectively monitor all blooddisorders. Instead, the selection of an appropriatemethod is strongly influenced by several factors, includingdiagnosis and screening practices; the acute orchronic nature of the condition; and the healthcareutilization pattern, geographic distribution, and socialand cultural norms of the affected population. Thesefactors pose challenges but also provide strategic opportunitieswhen choosing and implementing surveillancemethods. This paper discusses the principles, challenges, and successes experienced in developing and redesigningCDC-sponsored surveillance of bleeding disorders, hemoglobinopathies, VTE, and blood safety.
