FRAGILE MATERIAL AND SPECIAL HANDLING
Fragile items should be separated and placed in containers (i.e. archival quality polyethylene bags,
vials, gelatin capsules, or boxes), packed with acid-free tissue, and packaged in a separate bag or
box that clearly notes fragile contents. Do not use cotton, paper towel or toilet paper to wrap fragile
items; use only acid-free tissue. Film canisters are unacceptable packaging containers for any
artifact category.
Artifacts need to be protected from one another to eliminate bag wear and removal of catalog
numbers. Do NOT over-fill bags; this may cause unnecessary edge damage or crushing of artifacts
or the bag to tear. Foil may be used to protect artifacts, but should not be depended on to retain
written information. DO NOT place heavy objects with lighter ones
