Over the past decade, Information andCommunications Technology (ICT) has beenrecognized as a potential enabler for nationaleconomic and social development and forstrengthening competitiveness for Thailand. Thegovernment, then, started the initiative in 1992 toset up the National IT Committee, or NITC, whichis a high-level policy body chaired by the PrimeMinister. Its members comprise of executivesfrom relevant public and private sector. Themandates of NITC are to develop policies andplans to promote ICT development and utilizationin the country. The National Electronics andComputer Technology Center (NECTEC), a semiautonomousgovernment agency under theMinistry of Science, Technology and Environment,has been assigned to host the secretariat officeand to conduct supporting work for thecommittee.
