The ripe females have conspicuous orangegonads visible through the dorsal and lateral sidesof the carapace. Mating usually occurs within24 h, of the pre-spawning moult of the femaleprawns (Rao 1965; Wickins & Beard 1974). Matingtakes place between hard-shelled males andripe-soft-shelled females which have completedtheir pre-mating moult. The fertilized eggs becomeattached to each other and the setae of the firstpleopods by a cementing substance (Pillay 1993).
