There are several limitations to this study which should be acknowledged. First, it must be
kept in mind that the results are limited to older adolescents aged 15-19 who were enrolled
in an intervention study. The data from the parents and the adolescents were subjective
accounts of the stress and symptoms. Clinician assessments of the stress and symptoms to
compare to the parents’ and adolescents’ perceptions were not available for this current
study. Several factors that may contribute to reports of stress and symptoms by individuals
with schizophrenia (e.g subjects’ insight, parents’ mental health) were not included in the
analysis. Our data also presented a gender-bias in the sample because male-dominant
adolescents with schizophrenia and female-dominant designated parents were recruited in
the original study. Other limitations to this study include the relatively small number of
subjects and cross-sectional observations.
