2.1 The Research Context: SMEs Non-Traditional Handicraft Exporters in Ghana
In terms of definition, there is no single, uniformly acceptable one for SMEs (Storey, 1994). Firm differs in their levels of
capitalization, sales and employment. Hence, definitions that employ measures of size (numbers of employees, turnover,
profitability, net worth etc) when applied to one sector could lead to all firms being described as small, while the same
definition when applied to a different sector would lead to different results (Quartey, 2001).
