Our school is a small private school for children on the Autism spectrum. We have students from low to high ability across the spectrum. Our school struggled with ways to reach out and get in touch with thoughts, feeling, ideas, and expressions from our students. In some cases, students who aren’t able to articulate or work with a group very well, now have a way that they can communicate their needs or tell us about something that happened to them in their life outside of school. Linden Grove needed hands on solutions for a variety of communications across all subjects using familiar manipulates that are fun, engaging, and useful to an everyday classroom teacher teaching a variety of different learning styles. LEGO solutions fit our needs in every way. What learning targets are you teaching with LEGO Education solutions?I can use LEGO to teach to all the Common Core Standards, plus I can also target individual needs and differentiate for each students’ special needs all while using STEM, with again fun! Have you experienced an aha moment with a child when using LEGO Education solutions? We used Lego Story Starter to map out the stages of a student’s hopes and dreams. We used the three plates as a 4 year, 8 year, and 12 year plan to help explain the hopes and dreams of a student’s future. One student who does not communicate well due to his disability, was able to show us his hopes and dreams in a detailed way that he could not verbally explain. He was able to use the Lego model he built to show us what he wants out of life, something he has never been able to express, even to his parents! Why did you go into education?I enjoy and get a rush out of inspiring or lifting up children’s spirits while teaching them something new. I enjoy seeing happy faces and happy parents who are not always sure if their child fits in with the others. I am lucky to work in an environment where I help shape lives in a positive fun manner. What's your greatest teaching accomplishment?I have been asked by several parents if I can follow their child on to the next stage of life in high school. That has always made me feel like I’ve really done my job well, but inspiring my fellow teachers to use new and innovative ideas like LEGO Education, as well. We have taken our program to the level we dreamed of in a very short amount of time. What teacher inspired you when you were in school, Why?I have always been inspired by my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Hoyle. I lived in San Diego at the time and she was an East coast Jersey girl. We had a connection that made me feel a part of the class, school, and community. We always worked hard, but we always had fun. It was maybe my most successful year in school. It also made me want to do better than I was doing at the time. So she inspires me to continue to inspire others through hard work and fun
