I have clarification on the presence of “1S” at the beginning of an engine serial number. The “1S” is not relevant to engine identification and was mistakenly placed on the label as the result of a programming error. Below is a more detailed description.

When engine emissions labels are printed, there is a programming sub-routine that pulls data from a text file for each specific emissions label part number. The “1S” is actually part of an AIAG B-4 standard for 1D bar codes and is per an ISO/IEC 16022 spec for 2D data matrix. When the print sub-routine was written, there was a mistake in the code that pointed the man readable field to the line in the text file with the “1S” added to the ESN prefix and the bar code field was pointed to the ESN line that did not have the 1S. The pointers were reversed from what they should have been, and consequently the 1S has shown up on some engine labels because of a programming mistake.

In April of 2011, the mistake was noticed and corrected. This is why some engines have the “1S” and some do not. The “1S” shows up only on the emission label. It does not show up in the engine serial number located on the upper left side of the crankcase, in the on-line service portal or in the specifications & identifications document previously sent to you.
