I'd better be going," Lawrence said to the two young women sitting at the table. "Bye, darling," Lawrence said to his girlfriend, Nicole. "See you tomorrow. And Sarah, it was great to finally meet you."
"You, too," replied Sarah.
After Lawrence left the restaurant, the two women started talking about him.
"He's really nice, Nicole. How did you meet him?"
"Actually," Nicole explained, "we met twice."
"Twice?"
"Yes. I'll explain. Do you remember when my mother was in the hospital last spring?"
"Sure, when she had heart trouble. I remember," said Sarah.
"I got a call late at night from my father to come to the hospital immediately. I rushed over. I was a mess when I left the house. I hadn't brushed my hair or anything."
"Of course not."
"It was stupid of me, but I drove very fast. I almost had an accident with another driver. It was completely my fault, but I shouted at him."
"Did he shout back?" Sarah asked.
"He wasn't happy, but he was actually quite nice about it. I continued to the hospital and forgot all about him. Mom got better, and I went back to being a normal person who drives carefully and doesn't yell at people on the street."
"Then what happened?"
"I went to a party a month later. I saw a man who looked familiar. I tried to remember why. He didn't look happy to see me. He reminded me who he was - the driver I had almost hit with my car! I was so embarrassed. I apologized twenty times for my behavior. Finally, he said he could forgive me only if I agreed to go to dinner with him. We've been together ever since.
