Small Group Discussion 1Topic: An Organization – talk about the various things about your chosen organization: like we studied on pages 36 and 37 in the textbook including the sound as an example of one speaker – you have to make it for every member of your group. The sound is in your Google Drive folder.Group members: 5 (NOT MORE AND NOT LESS – EXACTLY 5). A few students (as needed) may be in more than one group in order that every student is in a group and that every group has 5 members.Choice of organization: This is up to each group. Each group choose ONE organization to discuss. You may choose an organization from the Internet, but be sure you use your own words to discuss that organization.Time: About 5 minutes (based on 1 minute per group member).Method: Be creative. Be unique. You can choose one of the following or find a different way to do it as long as it is some kind of group discussion. A group discussion is where the group members talk together or where the group members talk to the group of listeners or interact with that group of listeners.1.You may stand or sit in a group in front of class and talk together about the organization. Be sure the audience (other students and teacher) can hear you talk together.2.You may stand or sit in a straight row and each talk to the audience in a panel discussion. Google: “The panelists discuss the issue or topic with each other by asking questions or reacting to the views and opinions of other panel members. A specific amount of time should be established. c. The leader or moderator closes the discussion and provides a summary of panel presentations and discussion.”In this case, questions may be asked by members of the audience.3.You may stand or sit in any order and express your thoughts to the audience and invite the audience to ask questions (during your talking or at the end of your talking).4.Or you may find some other unique way to do the “group discussion.”Important things to remember:1.Every member of the group must speak. Your score is based on your talking. That means NO TALK = NO SCORE.2.Scripts or notes are not allowed. If there is a script or notes with any speaker, that speaker’s score is automatically zero.3.Sounding memorized will result in 75 % of your score. If you forget what you planned to say next, just talk. It is never good speaking to sound memorized.4.The teacher must check who is who before you begin so that I am sure to give each of the speakers a score according to the rubrics (the rubrics are in your Google Drive Folder).5.Listening is very important. Thus listening is part of your score. If you seem to not be listening you lose points. Any time someone is talking to us (whether in front of class, some other meeting, or just in conversation), we should listen. Conversation is talking and listening. So listen!Do not allow the mobile phone, tablet or other such device to control you, but you control it for your benefit.Do not allow a “friend” to take away your points, but help that “friend” to listen, too.6.Be on time! If you are late and your group waits for you, then everyone in the group is counted LATE. If a member of your group is late, those who are present may talk without that member by having someone else in the class take that member’s place. The person who takes their place may read (no score) or talk free (be scored – they will be given the highest of their scores). In this case, when the late member arrives, then may speak (helped by the group or others, as stated before) that group member will get a score, though counted late, but the other members will be counted as on time.7. One person may be part of two groups so that each group will have 5 members. However, they will be given one score – the highest score of the times they speak.Randolph Brock (EN331 teacher)
