There are some countries that have not ratify the CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) and Somalia is one of these countries. In this article I would like to compare between Somalia the non-CEDAW - ratify and Nigeria which ratified the CEDAW. The similarities between the two countries are that, women of the both countries were subjected to a lot of violations due to cultural and religion issues such as early and forced marriage, FGM and domestic violence. However, although Nigeria ratified the CEDAW as the article 16 of the CEDAW confirms that men and women have the equal rights to choose a spouse and to enter into marriage, but it seems that Nigeria failed to implement this part of the treaty. Girls and women are involved in forced and early marriage as well as treated as a slave by her husband,. Even after husband's death they have no right or freedom to continue their life up normally instead they forced again to enter into marriage of one the deceased relatives and unfortunately this relative could be one of the deceased’s brother or paternal cousin. Whereas women in Somalia are exposed the similar conflict and we called this bad habit in Somali culture (DUMAAL) which means (succession) where the brother or the paternal cousin have the ultimate right to marry the deceased's widow to keep both the widow and the children among the family. And this considered one of the ugliest forms of violations against women's rights on the both countries. as this is the best solution and best interest for the children as their own uncle would be the step father
