A 33-year-old mother of four already facing child neglect charges is now accused of wrapping her dead child in a garbage bag and tossing it into a garbage bin behind a Townline Road apartment complex.
Police say they believe the infant was stillborn, Wausau Police Capt. Greg Hagenbucher said Tuesday. The child’s body has not been recovered.
Zoua Yang was charged in Marathon County Circuit Court on Tuesday with concealing the death of the child, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 3½ years in prison. Misdemeanor bail jumping charges also were filed against Yang, who was ordered held on a $1,000 cash bond.
An investigation began Oct. 17 when an anonymous caller reported that Yang was seven months pregnant when she gave birth to a baby and “threw the baby into a black garbage bag and into the dumpster,” according to the criminal complaint. The child’s gender was not disclosed.
When police questioned Yang, she admitted the baby was born in the early morning hours of Oct. 10 while Yang was at the home of a relative who lives in the 1300 block of Townline Road in Wausau, according to the complaint. Yang said she didn’t realize she was pregnant until the baby was born.
When Yang realized the baby was “too large to attempt to flush down the toilet,” Yang panicked, according to the police report.
“It’s just a very sad thing all around,” Hagenbucher said.
Yang wrapped the infant in two plastic bags and placed the body in the dumpster at about 5 a.m.; a garbage truck arrived at the apartment complex about 30 minutes later, according to the complaint.
Investigators on Oct. 23 combed through the Marathon County Landfill, but were unsuccessful in finding any human remains, according to court documents. Future searches are not planned.
Yang faces two pending misdemeanor child neglect charges filed in Marathon County Circuit Court on Dec. 21, court records show. She was released from the Marathon County Jail on Feb. 1 on a $500 signature bond. Yang’s children now reside with their father in Eau Claire, police said.
Marathon County Circuit Judge Jill Falstad on Tuesday ordered Yang not to care for or be in the presence of any minor children until the latest case is resolved. A pretrial conference is set for Monday.
