A refugee advocate says he is disappointed the negative rhetoric surrounding asylum seekers is still going on in the Hunter region.

Hundreds of residents are expected to gather in Newcastle today for the third annual "Walk Together".

It is an initiative by refugee support group "Welcome to Australia" and will start at midday with a BBQ in Civic Park.

A 27-year-old man is currently before the courts, accused of verbally abusing two Muslim women in Newcastle earlier this month.

Local advocate Brad Chilcott says anti-muslim sentiment needs to stop.

"I think the debate hasn't improved," he said.

"We're still dehumanising asylum seekers, denying them their human rights, really teaching our community to fear and suspect people that are different to ourselves.

"I think what has changed is that in recent months Islamaphobia and fear of people of the Islamic religion has been added to this debate."

Mr Chilcott has joined forces with the National Mosque Open Day and is encouraging Hunter residents to visit a Newcastle mosque today.

He says more than 10,000 people are expected to gather together at 18 sites around the country for the Walk Together event.

"People visiting a mosque in the morning - there's one in Newcastle that's open, then joining Walk Together.

"So we're hoping that many more thousands will join in this year.

"We'd love to see Australians get along and dispel some of those myths about Islamic people and their culture and practices, to help unite our communities, rather than divide them.
