In conclusion, misspelling is found to be one types of mistakes many Thai university
students make in their writing. Ten types of spelling inaccuracies were found in this study.
The results of the study are similar to other research on the differences between native and
target languages in terms of orthography, phonology and morphology. The main causes of
spelling mistakes are not a result of differences between the Thai and the English writing
systems and students should be more aware of phonological and morphological knowledge in
order to make correct spellings. Teaching spellings by focusing on how words are spelled and
pronounced seems to best suit most Thai students at all levels in the EFL context.
