A Bill tackling the acts of nuclear terrorism Approved
Jakarta, Jia Xiang-Bill (the BILL) on the ratification of the International Convention for the Prevention of nuclear terrorism Act (the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism) was adopted into law by PARLIAMENT in the plenary meeting on Tuesday (25/2/14).
The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly through Resolution MU UN No. 29/290 dated April 13, 2005 and entered into force on 7 July 2007 it regulates in a comprehensive manner about the criminal acts of nuclear terrorism. Indonesia may accept this Convention and poured it in the legislation as an attempt to strengthen counter-terrorism
nuclear.Description the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Affairs) Marty Natalegawa, in the opinion of the Government, the ratification of the Convention was a form of real commitment to Indonesia in realizing the security of the world. In addition, as part of the efforts of Indonesia to protect the public from misuse of materials and radioactive substances and nuclear technology by the party who is not responsible, especially by terrorist groups.
Furthermore, Indonesia is expected to strengthen nuclear security system thoroughly considering the economic benefits embodied in the nuclear materials and radioactive substances for the industrial sector, research, and health. In addition, the an increase in nuclear material ownership and licensing of radioactive waste and radioactive substances are increasingly pushing the Government to strengthen security against the nuclear settings in order not to be abused.
"With the setting up and control of nuclear materials is tight against the ownership of radioactive substances and will minimize the possibility of misuse of these materials for the manufacture of nuclear weapons," said Foreign Affairs.

Indonesia also reinforces and complements the existing legal regulations, such as Act No. 10 of 1997 on Ketenaganukliran, law No. 15 of 2003 about Tackling the crime of terrorism, Presidential Decree No. 49 in 1986 about the ratification of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, and the presidential Regulation No. 46 in 2009 about the passage of Amendment of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material.
