The 100 years of Kad Luang might seem short compared to the 700 years of Chiang Mai, but Kad Luang is a rare example of a market with a long life, though it was burnt down once in a fire. It was a temporary market when it began, but it developed into a permanent one, and has survived to the present time. The popularity of Kad Luang is due to its location, between the old city wall and Ping River. It is convenient for transportation of products. Sellers from the suburbs and buyers from downtown can easily travel here. It used to be the rest stop for the transportation of logs in the past. It was crowded with people who bought, sold or travelled via Ping River. The growth of Kad Luang is also related to the changes and progress of the nearby areas as well.
