When Thailand’s rural electrification program began in 1972, the country as a whole was at a fairly low level of development, with rural residents among the least advantaged.Notably, only 10% of people living outside the Bangkok Metropolitan Area had access to electric power. Thirty years later, however, more than 99% of Thailand’s villages have electricity service. The country’s dramatic growth in gross national product over these decades stemmed, in large part, from the government’s commitment to developing and improving living standards in rural areas.
