We had been informed of consumer complaint from Coop on Thursday last week
that a consumer had phoned Coop store where he/she had bought a can of pineapple
that when he/she had tried to open a can, the pull tab came off
and the consumer had wounded his finger from this pull tab.
Coop is not over reacting but calm on this issue as:-
a) The consumer’s wound is not that serious and the consumer is not so furious
b) Coop has tested the new J2 lid in Japanese third party lab before actual introduction
so they duly know that there is no fundamental design failure in this J2 lid
c) Coop duly understands that generally the E/O lid of any canned goods has a limitation
that when the tab angle is skewed it will come off
(Thus there is a Japanese instruction & illustration on can lid not to shake
the tab left and right and to putt the ring up straight.)
d) Also on the wound, from the attached photo, it seems the consumer may have cut the can
with can opener after the tab came off, and thus the consumer may have cut the finger
from the lid (which is also warned on the can lid in bold letter to
“be cautious of cutting finger from opened lid”) and not the pull tab.
At the moment, Coop thinks this is one off incident where the consumer had not been able to
properly open the can lid, but in order to say this we first need to confirm that there was
nothing wrong on SAICO side. Thus please can you provide us below?
The can lid arrived today but unfortunately the consumer had disposed the can body itself
so we do not know the lot number, so the below confirmation should be all the J2 lid
that SAICO received from early this year up to recent lid.
