With the rapid spread of Zika virus and the media attention,
anesthesiologists providing obstetric anesthesia need to be aware
of the current recommendations and physiologic alterations
caused by Zika infection in the maternal-fetal unit. Pregnant
women and the public at large are anxious about Zika. Staying
informed helps physicians to deal with their concerns.Mosquito,
tick, and human vectors carrying Zika virus are likely to spread
across the southern United States and other parts of the world.
Dealing with the physical, physiologic, and psychological needs
of our patients will be particularly important as Zika virus or the
next infectious agent spreads across our globalized world
